"Blame"

We blame things on the government,

And all the stuff the devil sent,

Not our fault the money’s spent,

And why, we do not know.

We blame the one we’re married to,

Blame our in-laws, family crew,

And can’t believe the things they do,

It’s not our fault and so,

We blame the preacher and the church,

Blame hypocrites upon their perch,

It’s their fault by our research,

And we just have to say,

Blame our leaders, one and all,

The President, support forestall,

The governor he’s gone awol,

We’ll vote ‘em out someday.

Blame the weather, blame the wind,

Blame the weatherman again,

Blame their forecast, wonder when,

They’ll ever get it right.

Blame the strangers, your friends, too,

Criminals and what they do,

Blame the Covid and the flu,

Blame ‘em day and night.

Never say that it’s your fault,

If you feel guilty, even caught,

On confession call a halt,

No matter if it’s true.

Deceive ‘em for as long you can,

Deny and blame should be your plan,

Defer to when it all began,

And shift the blame from you.

Try blaming that old horoscope,

That’s it, fate won’t let you cope,

They let you sink without a rope,

And didn’t even care,

That it was ne’er your fault, you see,

Victimized by what came to be,

Not your responsibility,

Take blame, don’t you dare.

And yes it’s called the old blame game,

But by any other name,

Somebody else’s fault the same,

And never, ever you.

So go along your merry way,

Deflecting blame and always stay,

Free to point and always say,

It’s them, so get a clue.

“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and show that His word has no place in our hearts.” (1 John 1:8-10, NLT)

The poem is an exaggerated way of pointing out the failure of some to take responsibility. If we deny the truth about ourselves we are being deceitful and calling God a liar. John counsels us to confess our sins, which means to agree with God. If we agree with Him it means we call it what He does. If we defer, excuse, blame, or in any way deflect what God says we miss the grace He offers. If we confess we may receive forgiveness and cleansing. It’s just as simple as that!

Lord, help us agree with You, in Jesus name.
