"Change"

I’ve known some ranchin’ people,

Who were so set in their ways,

They went right out of business,

Though their stubbornness still stays.

Life is filled with change you know,

And brand new things to learn,

But some won’t leave their comfort zone,

Afraid a bridge they’ll burn.

Low-risk, no-risk living,

Is what they’re striving for,

But what they do not realize,

Is past that brand-new door,

There’s a great adventure waiting,

For a step of faith to go,

And if we don’t take advantage,

We may never know,

What great things might have happened,

With miracles and fun,

But we just sat and waited,

And never made a run.

Some churches have this virus,

Opposing any change,

When God the Holy Spirit,

Would love to rearrange,

The way we do our worship,

And how we share the word,

But stuck in their tradition,

The really get absurd.

Lord, save us from our comfort zone,

And unwillingness to grow,

Help us realize the change,

Will let the Spirit flow.

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18, NIV)

We are being transformed! What a thought! It is the work of the Holy Spirit to help us become more and more like Jesus. He lives the life of Jesus through us as we learn to die to selfishness and egotism. We reflect His glory, which refers to His presence. This is what the Christian life is all about, so you can see why resistance to change is so incompatible with the Bible teaches. Tradition can be a good thing if it reminds us of what God did yesterday. But it becomes idolatrous when it resists the changes brought by the Holy Spirit.

Lord, help us embrace the Spirit’s transforming work, in Jesus’ name.
