"Doubtin' Tommy"

Old Tommy missed the meetin’,

On resurrection night,

And when they told the story,

It made him so uptight,

Said he would not believe it,

Unless he touched the nail-print scar,

And put his hand into His side,

He had to go that far.

Eight days later Tommy showed up,

With the rest of them to meet,

And along came Jesus,

Stood right there, looked up to greet,

Said to them peace be with you,

And then to Thomas said come near,

Reach here with your finger,

And touch the scars right here.

Don’t be unbelieving,

But believe I died and rose,

God bless you, you saw me,

But especially all of those,

Who never got to see Me,

But their faith has let them know,

That I am the Messiah,

As their lives indeed will show.

Some think seeing is believing,

With Thomas, guess it’s true,

But believing leads to seeing,

And that’s what we should do.

“Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.’” (John 20:28-29, NAS)

Thomas just had a hard time with the whole thing. It was beyond his comprehension and certainly his faith that Jesus could have come back after such an horrific death. He missed the first meeting when Jesus appeared, but was there eight days later when Jesus appeared again. He invited Thomas to touch the scars and Thomas was overwhelmed with wonder. Then Jesus said something wonderful. he pronounced a blessing for those who don’t see the Lord yet believe. That includes us! We walk by faith and not by sight.

Lord, strengthen our faith, in Jesus’ name.
