"Friend"
Off down through the horse trails,
We rode for all the day,
Up and down those rocky hills,
Our horses did okay.
‘Cept for one small buck-out,
The horses calm behaved,
Cross creeks and hard wood bottoms,
And red clay roads unpaved.
And out there we told stories,
And sang a few good songs,
My brother and my best friend,
And no doubt he belongs,
Inside the inner circle,
Of people close to me,
He has known me longer,
And still shows that he,
Always can be trusted,
An ally to the end,
Has my back in trouble,
And thankful he’s my kin.
But the Good Book has a promise,
About the Friend of friends,
Sticks closer than a brother,
And always will defend.
And that one is Jesus,
We know Him, so can you,
Just pray and open up your heart,
And He will save you, too.
“A man who has friends [a]must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24, NKJV)
My brother really is my best friend in the world. We are very close, and enjoy being together, especially when we can get horseback time. Completely at ease, we talk about everything imaginable. I am thankful to have him in my life. But even more important is my relationship to Jesus. My brother is close to the Lord, and that brings us closer, too. But nothing can ever replace the friend that “sticks closer than a brother.” The Lord offers an intimate friendship with all of us, and if we knew how much He cares, we would never be reluctant to cooperate. He is indeed the Friend of friends.
Lord, help us to received Your friendship, in Jesus’ name.
