"Grief"

We sat there as the husband cried,

The wife moaned soft in pain,

Long months fighting I’ll confide,

Her treatments were in vain.

And now the time was growing close,

With nothing left to do,

But wait and pray and make the most,

Of these last moments few.

Why not me instead of her,

His head was in his hands,

And ne’er an answer to infer,

‘Cause no one understands.

Some may claim to know these things,

A higher plan they cite,

But trusting without knowing brings,

God’s peace when dark the night.

Until we know as we are known,

When heaven’s sunrise dawns,

With all our tears and sorrows flown,

Earth’s chaos all withdrawn.

Then we’ll see with heaven’s view,

What happened here below,

When our finest dreams come true,

And all we need to know.

The question then becomes, you see,

Will we trust Him with the pain,

When grief and loss won’t leave us be,

And we fear our thoughts insane.

O Lord, you know just how we feel,

When our world falls apart,

And your Word promised grace that’s real,

That flows deep in the heart.

So help us, Lord, and help us now,

Please see us through it all,

Give us peace and show us how,

To follow heaven’s call.

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (2 Corinthians 1:4, NLT)

God’s comfort is promised to all His children who go through trouble. This would include the sickness and death of a loved one. Don’t believe the ones who claim you can “faith” away all trouble. it simply isn’t true. There is a measure of unexplained suffering we all will experience this side of the grave. That said, God is always with us, and promises the grace we need when we need it. I believe wholeheartedly in God’s power to heal our bodies and lives. But sometimes the miracle we want doesn’t happen, and it’s not because of unbelief. We don’t even know why, but we choose to trust God and rely upon His comfort. Then we are equipped to comfort others.

Lord, comfort us so that we may comfort them, in Jesus’ name.
