“God in Skin”
There was no earthly fanfare,
A small few knew He came,
There was no big attendance,
And no one knew His name.
The thought that God Almighty,
Would visit what He made,
Through such a tiny back door,
Fulfilled all that He said.
An egg inside a woman,
By God’s own pow’r conceived,
So that the Holy Spirit,
By all can be received.
A couple who were unknown,
Sheep-keepers late at night,
Unexpected angels,
Star-gazers’ foreign sight.
Only one with power,
And murder in his heart,
In that fateful hour,
He played an evil part.
A strange, surprising story,
But heaven’s greatest news,
Worth everything we sacrifice,
Or anything we lose.
The simple, yet the humble,
Those you don’t invite,
The ones nobody else wants,
Are precious in His sight.
And not just them included,
But moved to center stage,
God chooses the nobodies,
When He the world will save.
So, can we think it’s different,
With how God works today,
In every generation,
When God has His say.
He invites the sinners,
To save them from their sin,
The hungry and the thirsty,
To prisoners says “come in.”
His love rolls like the ocean,
The joy of God in skin,
Immanuel, God with us,
His mercy has no end.
“…few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful…” (1 Cor. 1:26, NLT)
It’s not a Christmas verse but it certainly fits with the message of Christmas. That’s because the Christmas story is filled with “nobodies” whom God used to do great things. God’s methodology has always been to use those who are otherwise discredited and nobody’s pick. He specializes in loving the unlovable and saving the unsavable. It’s the Gospel of Christmas, and it’s all about Jesus.
Lord, help us cooperate with the grace that saves, in Jesus’ name.
