"Run, Devil, Run"

Go on down, yes, way on down,

As low as you can go,

Get on down where the only sound,

Is your tear and heart-beat slow.

Get quiet enough, no off the cuff,

But sure as you can be,

To still your mouth, and words without,

‘Cause silence is the key,

To hear so clear, ‘cause God is near,

To say just what you need,

Grace will flow and you will know,

It’s what is guaranteed.

The humble soul will be made whole,

No more does God resist,

The proud so loud, a fast-paced crowd,

The word of God they’ve missed.

But humility, grace trigger, see,

The one God will exalt,

And gladly lift and close the rift,

And forgive their every fault.

Then they turn, because they learn,

The devil, he must go,

In Jesus’ name, because He came,

This ain’t no churchy show.

But take a care, it’s real warfare,

To make the devil run,

But grace is there, so strong I swear,

The humble get it done.

“But He gives great grace. Therefore it says. ‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:6-7, NAS)

God always opposes the proud. Why? Because He is showing them that their selfishness is lethal, both for themselves and others. In a way, God’s resistance is a form of grace, because otherwise He would let people go. As soon as they turn and humble themselves the grace flows stronger and stronger. He gives more and more grace, which becomes the foundation of our submission to God. Grace is triggered by humility, and by standing under God’s authority He enables us to exercise it. Those who are most fiercely humble are the ones who can make the devil run.

Lord, help us to humbly receive Your grace, in Jesus’ name.
