"Still Cowboy"
They say cowboys ain’t easy to love,
And they’re harder to hold,
But that’s only part of the story,
That’s often been told.
Though some are still outlaws,
With morals that will disappoint,
Out drinkin’, carousin’,
In some old nasty beer joint.
My cowboy heroes,
Left all of that nonsense behind,
And now claim the Savior,
Have learned to be faithful and kind.
They don’t spend much time,
Grievin’ about yesterday,
They’re workin’ too hard,
A horseback to just earn their pay.
And they aren’t offended,
With posers, pretenders at all,
And think it’s amazing,
They still hear that old cattle call.
They’re steady and humble,
And won’t be promoting themselves,
Though their stories fill books,
Overflowing a thousand book shelves.
So let that baby grow up to be cowboy,
If that’s what God wants him to be,
‘Cause the ones that still cowboy are waiting,
To show him the way, don’t you see.
“The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2, NAS)
The best way to learn anything is by having someone show you and mentor you into it. it’s true with cowboying and it’s true with life. Paul told Timothy to find faithful men and impart to them what he had learned from the apostle. These men in turn would be able to mentor others, and so the multiplication of discipleship would flow. Nothing can replace relationship that foster spiritual growth- no program, gathering or seminar. If it’s not relational it won’t reproduce.
Lord, help us to faithfully mentor others, in Jesus’ name.
