"Time"

Time is something we all have,

At least until we don’t,

Some never stop to think it through,

They’re busy, so they won’t.

Time, she runs and passes by,

They say she slips away,

Time is here and quickly gone,

Becomes a yesterday.

It’s given as a gift to us,

It’s our choice how it’s spent,

Either for the Lord above,

Or we wonder where it went.

We have a birth when it begins,

And ends the day we die,

The dash is there between the dates,

The numbers do not lie.

But what we do both here and now,

Goes far beyond these years,

Echoes in eternity,

To heaven’s golden spheres.

In our hands we hold it, see,

And ‘less we refuse,

He’ll help us maximize the time,

We win each time we lose.

And when we near the race’s end,

And know it’s time to go,

With grace we stretch our energy

So in our hearts we know,

That we have finished all He assigned,

And done what He said do,

Hear His good and faithful son,

His Spirit makes it true.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12, NKJV)

What does it mean to “number our days?” Perhaps it means that we are not passive about the days we live. Instead, we are proactively seeking to maximize them. “Numbering” might mean we are keeping track of how we spend our time. We continuously adjust our priorities when we realize that we are being distracted, deceived or otherwise delayed by anyone or anything. When we make the adjusttment things might get better or even worse, depending on the situation. But all that matters is that our time is filled with doing God’s will, God’s way and on God’s schedule. Paul was thankful to say he had fought the good fight, finished the race, and remained faithful to the end. That’s exactly what we need to do.

Lord, teach us to number our days, in Jesus’ name.
