"Vision"

When young my only vision,

Was a cowboy I would be,

And it’s only fair to mention,

That I saw ‘em on TV.

But then right out my window,

Their spurs would jingle by,

And I let one and all know,

I’ve give it my best try.

But life can steal a vision,

And we all know it’s true,

Sometimes it’s just a mission,

To do what you have to.

Twists and turns and ups and downs,

Rode a circle wide and far,

Lived in cities and in small towns,

Sometimes lowering the bar,

To just one of survival,

Where you just get through the day,

And on its arrival,

You sometimes sadly say,

I once thought I’d be a cowboy,

But looks like that’s almost dead,

Just tried to find my own joy,

Doing other things instead.

But I’d then smell the horse sweat,

Or the saddle leather’s scent,

I’d think it’s not too late yet,

Though a lot of years had went.

Or I’d see the punchers ridin’,

Moving cows to pastures new,

And in you I’m confidin’,

That the hope inside me grew.

And then one day I realized,

A new door had arrived,

An answered prayer in my eyes,

My vision had survived.

And now I’m not a young man,

But I’m not finished yet,

And according to the Lord’s plan,

My heart’s desire I get.

I spend my days in boots and hat,

A tending to the cattle,

In Texas’ heart is where I’m at,

And often in the saddle.

So cowboy up and cowboy on,

Your dream can still come true,

If in God’s eyes it’s not wrong,

It’s something you’ll still do.

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, NAS)

Delighting in the Lord means you love Him and want to do His will. You’re willing to put aside your own desires in order to obey Him. That goes for all of us without exception. But if you faithfully do this something wonderful happens. Some, if not all of the things your once desired He gives to you. The rest don’t matter. We serve a wonderful, promise-keeping God.

Lord, help us delight in You, in Jesus’ name.
