"Water"

I’ve splashed in muddy puddles,

And four-wheeled in the woods,

I’ve rafted down the rapids,

And faster if I could.

I swam the muddy Jordan,

And in the old Dead Sea,

Ran up the road where Jesus walked,

And the waves of Galilee.

I’ve played beside Gulf waters,

And the blue Caribbean,

And baptized in a water trough,

And in the Bay washed clean.

But the best is living water,

Something that Jesus gives,

And if you ever drink it,

He said you’ll always live.

And you will not get thirsty,

It satisfies so much,

It’s all about the Savior,

And the Holy Spirit’s touch.

And from your inner being,

Will flow a river strong,

Because that living water,

Can’t stay inside for long.

Before it starts to spill out,

With mercy and with love,

It’s the shower sent from heaven,

And the Good Lord up above.

So get that living water,

And let it quench your thirst,

God offers it to all of us,

And better still, the worst.

Water, living water,

Water that’s alive,

It comes straight from Jesus,

And there is none beside.

“But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life…” (John 4:14, NLT)

Jesus offered water to the woman. The water He offered would do two things, according to Jesus. First, it would quench. person’s thirst. The implication is that nothing else will. But if you drink this, well, you won’t be thirsty again. The promise is all about finding satisfaction that comes only from God and is received only through Jesus. Second, it does just flow in. It flows out. Like a bubbling spring, Jesus said. This means that the water won’t be still. It has to go somewhere. It’s so alive it is meant to touch others and quench their thirst, too. The woman Jesus offered the water to was a very messed up person. She was religious and used religious argument to try to deflect Jesus attention away from what was wrong with her. Her spiritual thirst had driven her from one man to another, and still she was thirsty. Her life changed, and she invited her entire village to come see a man who told everything I ever did. Yes, and still offered her living water.

Lord, help us drink the living water You give us. Let it flow through us to others, in Jesus name.
