"Water"

Come to the water and do not delay,

The river is flowing for the thirsty today,

The Word is the water so now hear Him say,

It’s a life overflowing for you.

Once ever you taste It you won’t be the same,

And it’s all freely given in the Lord Jesus’ name,

You’ll live for His praises, promoting His fame,

Set free to be faithful and true.

I heard of the water they told me to try,

A trottin’ my pony through a desert so dry,

Mirages of water from horizon to sky,

But I wondered if ever I’d find.

And just when he stumbled and couldn’t go on,

I saw there a spring that was bubbling alone,

Got a good drink ‘cause we were dry to the bone,

The Lord spoke so clear to my mind.

After this water you will thirst again,

But My living water your heart-thirst will end,

And when you are ready you’ll get it right then,

And I will give even more.

My spring born within you will overflow,

So the thirsty around you the Lord will let know,

If they need the water to Him they can go,

The miracle He has in store.

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” (John 4:13-14, NIV)

The Samaritan woman was sarcastic and argumentative with Jesus. But he persisted in speaking the truth in love to her. He didn’t react when she deflected the conversation, but instead He kept right on talking to her about what she really needed. He could have been harsh and judgmental but He wasn’t. He was fully aware she had morality issues and relationship debacles, but He kept pointing to the underlyng problem: her spiritual thirst. He knew that everything she had done was about that, and He knew He could meet that need with living water. Ultimately she listened, and the water that quenched her thirst became a well within her, springing up to life eternal.

Lord, give us living water, in Jesus’ name.
