"Wild Bovine Days"
Way out there I’ve done my share,
Of chasing wild bovine,
Cross-bred ear and leavin’ here,
Was what they had in mind.
Blame their way on DNA,
Or anything you choose,
Just don’t be slow when they all go,
Or pretty soon you’ll lose.
And I don’t know if when they go,
It’s what they meant to do,
Of if they’re cursed and just the worst,
Their chaos to ensue.
I just learned that my world turned,
On bringing cattle back,
Do what it took, with loops that shook,
Let fly from that old cack.
I’ll confide those frosty rides,
When weather whipped you cold,
Or hot and dry and every try,
Made you wish those cows were sold.
And if you could and only would,
Keep count of those you lost,
At least you knew when you were through,
What missing ‘em would cost.
And Dad would say it’s all okay,
If you do the best you can,
But down deep, it’s best to keep,
A tally book and plan.
So adios and raise a toast,
To bovines wild and fast,
My cowboy days with me always,
Made memories that last.
“…now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:25, NLT)
We were like sheep gone astray, but now we have returned to Jesus. Those wild cow hunts of my youth remind me of how fast and far I was willing to run from God. But the Spirit was faithfully pursuing me every step of the way. To put it simply, He would not let me go. His is the love that is always there to turn our hearts from destruction and to the only One who saves. It is a great relief to be home with Him, and to point others as well.
Lord, help us always return to You, in Jesus’ name.
