"Year New"
The year is new, this much is true,
We resolute again.
But never mind, ‘cause we will find,
When we next begin.
Until our gain brings Jesus’ fame,
Our plans are just a waste,
When life for Him, this world’s charms dim,
And our only haste,
Is Jesus’ way and just obey,
Don’t hesitate at all,
The Spirit’s nod, the strength of God,
And answering His call.
Living full out, without a doubt,
Is who we’re meant to be,
And only then, will Jesus send,
The grace to clearly see.
So make a plan, the flame to fan,
Embrace the Spirit’s fire,
To be God’s tool, a Jesus fool,
Filled with divine desire.
“I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:7-8, NLT)
Jesus changes how we appraise the value of our possessions and activity. Paul says everything is worthless compared to knowing Jesus, and anything he has discarded for the Lord he counts as garbage. Of course he is correct, and only when Jesus takes first priority in our lives can we learn how to accurately evaluate everything else. We go through life as stewards, not owners, and for this reason gladly cooperate with whatever the Lord calls us to give up or sacrifice. If someone makes too big a deal out of what they’ve left for Jesus it’s a sure sign their understanding of discipleship is off base. It’s a joy to follow Him and an honor to give up anything He requires. We joyfully sell out!
Lord, help us appraise our lives in light of what You’ve done for us and what we should do for You, in Jesus’ name.
