"As Seen On TV"

Lots of things can change your life,

They’re all seen on TV,

All sorts of remedies and such,

Designed for you and me.

They’s pillows that will cure your neck,

And copper clothes to wear,

There’s diet plans and stretchy bands,

And pills to grow your hair.

Stuff that makes you go to sleep,

Sleep better when you do,

And supplements to help you think,

If you remember to.

There’s pills to help your love life,

When you sit in tubs outside,

I’m not sure just where they are,

But maybe worth the ride.

There’s knives you’ll never sharpen,

Because of how they’re made,

And gizmos for the kitchen,

And how your table’s laid.

They’s every sort of pet food,

For your dog or cat to eat,

They even call some fancy,

I’m sure it’s hard to beat.

New prescriptions you should buy,

Or let your doctor know,

Lawyers who will take your case,

If the drug makes symptoms grow.

There’s all you need to make your truck,

Run like it is brand new,

Insurance if the thing breaks down,

When you don’t expect it to.

And hearing aids that fit so small,

Can’t tell that they are in,

But claim that you can hear it all,

Same color as your skin.

And on and on the pitch is made,

To help you look so young,

New windows, gutters, floors and phones,

The songs are loudly sung.

And if I could I’d have a room,

Filled with this stuff, you see,

The great things that will change your life,

Those all shown on TV.

But in the end it’s Jesus Christ,

Alone who brings real change,

And by the Spirit brings new life,

And ours to rearrange.

So maybe we should let it go,

When loud they try to sell,

Focus on what matters most,

Find heaven and miss hell.

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20, NLT)

We live in a very materialistic culture that revolves around the pursuit of stuff that we are told we need. No doubt God blesses us with material things, but where are our hearts in the matter? If our hearts are toward God our pursuit of eternal things will far outstrip any efforts for earthly treasure. Laying up treasure in heaven means we are focused on what matters most. God and His Word last forever. He is our top priority. What else? People last forever, so relationships should be our next priority. In this way our life’s investment will ultimately be eternal, not temporal.

Lord, help us lay up treasure in heaven, in Jesus’ name.
