"Dream"
I dreamed I heard ‘em comin’,
The drovers in the mist,
And some old song they’re hummin’,
‘Cross the dusty sod sun-kissed.
The creak of saddle leather,
The jingle of a spur,
In the dream twas windy weather,
And a quirt for flyin’ fur.
And the longhorn cattle walkin’,
Grazin’ grass as they passed by,
A few their horses balkin’,
At the cowboys’ plaintive cry.
And I watched all this in wonder,
‘Cause the dream seemed real to me,
The ground was filled with thunder,
And it took awhile you see,
For they came on by the legions,
Driven only by a few,
Of these boys from Texas regions,
With names nobody knew.
Twas a brief glimpse of the history,
Of the west as once it was,
And I thought of all its chivalry,
Couldn’t help myself because,
Since a little boy I’ve watched ‘em,
Been horseback with their kind,
Thought if I could only be him,
That top hand hard to find.
But silently they rode past,
With just a smiling wave,
Into the mist so steadfast,
That brief glimpse that they gave.
Of wild rags all a flyin’,
Wide brimmed hats and leather cuffs,
And all out cowboys tryin’,
To drive through country rough.
I woke up rested, ready,
To saddle up and go,
Live out that dream so steady,
And cowboy up you know.
We see the vision needed,
With revelation that is clear,
And may it all be heeded,
And to its best adhere.
The dream the Good Lord gives us,
Charts out the way ahead,
With His help it outlives us,
If we do just what He said.
“No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days, says God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.” (Acts 2:16, NLT)
Peter was explaining the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost when he quoted from Joel the prophet. The manifestation of the Spirit includes sons and daughters being empowered to speak God’s words. There were visions given to young men and dreams given oldsters. What is this all about? It’s about God communicating with us. Through prophetic words, dreams and visions God gives us an idea of what He intends for us to do. This fanciful comboy dream inspires the dream to cowboy up. Likewise when God gives a dream, it is a way for the Holy Spirit to inspire us to do greater things for God. Living in the inspiration of a vision will energize one’s life. Living without vision will kill it.
Lord, give us a vision of Your will, in Jesus’ name.
