"Lessons of My Father"
Somewhere deep within me,
My father’s voice I hear,
Though he is in heaven,
His voice seems always near.
Warning of a crazy cow,
Or a horse that might go wrong,
Always watching out for me,
Though he’s been gone so long.
He soldiered back in WW II,
Saw action, death and pain,
Came home and married mama,
Took up the cattle buyin’ game.
Sometimes harsh and angry,
In a hurry, way too fast,
Btu those are not the memories,
That for me will ever last.
He was a good provider,
Strong work ethic he taught me,
And never was a quitter,
Kept going, don’t you see.
Went to church on Sunday,
Put a check into the plate,
Loved to sing those old hymns,
Always said you pull your weight.
World’s changed since my Dad left us,
Wonder sometimes what he’d say,
‘Bout all these protesters,
That you see most everyday.
Pretty sure he’d wonder,
Why they aren’t somewhere at work,
No doubt he’d be disgusted,
‘Cause a job he never shirked.
The lessons of my father,
Pointed me to God above,
To know I had a daddy,
Who would fill me with His love.
So thank you to my earthly Dad,
For all you gave to me,
And praises to the Father,
Who through Jesus sets us free.
“Just as a father has compassion on his children, so he Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.” (Psalm 103:13-14, NAS)
The Lord who knows us best loves us the most. He is a compassionate Father, who gives us His mercy in amazing, life-changing, miraculous ways. It’s good to remember that, above all else, God is love. If you had an earthly Dad who showed compassion then you got a great head-start in relating to the heavenly Father. If you didn’t you might have to overcome a handicap to get there but you still can. That’s because He uses everything for His glory and our good. The Spirit enables us to call the great Creator of the universe our heavenly “Daddy.” It’s what makes fathers day extra-special.
Lord, help us to know and make known Your compassion, in Jesus’ name.
My mom and dad.
