"Water"
Come get a drink, not from the well,
But what I give to you,
So alive it saves from hell,
And quenches your thirst, too.
She didn’t understand at first,
Sarcasm was her way,
He promised her she’d never thirst,
That’s what He had to say.
And finally His words got through,
The invitation clear,
Everything He said was true,
It meant Messiah’s here.
She ran and told ‘em one and all,
Come meet the stranger now,
He brings with Him the sacred call,
And knew my sins somehow.
But kindly said that I could drink,
What then becomes a spring,
It is the Spirit’s power I think,
And just beats everything.
The joy of knowing Jesus first,
And then to make Him known,
The One who quenches all our thirst,
Since we to Him have flown.
“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I given them will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them giving them eternal life.” (John 4:13-14, NLT)
Jesus spoke to people in different ways to communicate the good news of eternal salvation. With the Samaritan woman He offered her what He called “living water.” In describing it to the woman He said two basic things. One, when she drank it her thirst would be quenched. He was saying that nothing will satisfy the human soul except a personal relationship with Jesus and His Spirit. It becomes the source of eternal life. Second, the water springs up and bubbles over. This means we become a catalyst for what has satisfied us. Others benefit from the Spirit that flows through us. Experiencing living water leads us into authentic worship which is characterized by Spirit and Truth. What a difference one conversation can make!
Lord, give us living water, in Jesus’ name.
