"Yesterday"

Yesterday when I was young,

Thought I was bullet-proof,

Hard knocks came, surprises sprung,

And showed to me the truth.

Ne’er a horse that can’t be rode,

And I thought whoop and spur,

But ne’er a one that can’t be throwed,

Hard ground with flying fur.

The Good Lord has His ways, you see,

To you wake up and learn,

You’re not who you’ve tried to be,

That path ain’t worth a dern.

God resists the loud and proud,

He does it every time,

No exceptions are allowed,

They’re none of them to find.

But if you humble down yourself,

He’s glad to give you grace,

He knows just how to give you health,

If you will seek His face.

Grace that strengthens you to fight,

Everything’s that wrong,

Makes you a warrior of the light,

And shows where you belong.

So humble down and cowboy up,

And let grace have its way,

Yours the overflowing cup,

Starting now, today.

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:6-7, NAS)

God always resists the proud. There are no exceptions. God always graces the humble. Always means always. What is humility exactly? The best definition I’ve heard is that we see ourselves accurately, the way God sees us. When we are in agreement with God’s view o us we are walking in humility. This positions us to receive what we need. God’s grace truly is sufficient for every need and challenge. When we humbly submit to God He energizes us with grace. Humility then is the grace-trigger. The flood of grace washed the devil out of our way.

Lord, grace us, in Jesus’ name.
