"Yesterday"
It feels like only yesterday,
That’s what the old man said,
Looking yonder far away,
With his hat upon his head.
He tipped it back and squinted long,
At the sunset ‘cross the sky,
This Texas is where I belong,
And will be till I die.
He pulled his cinches, let ‘em fall,
And draped ‘em like you should,
Led old Dan out past his stall,
And fed him up real good.
And then he turned and said to me,
I love this time of day,
It used to make me sad, you see,
I no longer feel that way.
When I was younger when it went,
Low feelings took ahold,
Felt like life was being spent,
And passing uncontrolled.
Year by year was slipping by,
And gone with little trace,
And I could never answer why,
Just trying to keep pace.
And then it changed to my surprise,
God gave a cowboy life,
Amazing blessings he supplies,
And a gorgeous Texas wife.
And of an evening when it comes,
We watch the sun go down,
A song of thanks my old heart hums,
Because such peace I’ve found.
A sadder time was yesterday,
But yesterday is gone,
And now I’m living for today,
And, yes, the coming dawn.
“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Please, Lord, save us. Please, Lord, give us success.” (Psalm 118:24-25, NLT)
Each day is a new gift from God. The correct response is to glorify God in it. That’s our gift back to Him. If we don’t we are cheating ourselves out of God’s best. Every day is meant to be celebrated, and it is rejoicing that will attract people to Him. We are depending on the Lord to both save us and give us success as He defines it. But the habit of rejoicing in the day insures that we will never postpone joy or the opportunity to show it to others, each new day as it comes.
Lord, help us to rejoice in the day, in Jesus’ name.
