"Get It Right"

I tried so hard to get things right,

Somehow I never could,

Old Daddy was so hard to please,

I tried, he knew I would.

But he was mad and in a hurry,

Cattle tradin’ miles to go,

And I was just his little man,

Trained to never slow.

But when I did just what he said,

He’d come behind and say,

This is the nearest nothing,

I’ve seen in quite a day.

And then I’d start all over,

In the pasture fixing fence,

Or working in the garden,

I’ve remembered ever since.

Loading trucks at 2 AM,

Catching yearlings on the fly,

Saddling when it was dark,

You couldn’t fault my try.

By the time that I was grown,

I carried lots of fear,

That I could never get things right,

Whether traveling far or near.

I disconnected from his voice,

And listened to replace,

With one that would encourage,

All my dreams to chase.

And then along came liars,

Who sounded good at first,

But they were old deceivers,

Whose ways were always cursed.

Wading through the falsehoods,

I finally heard what’s true,

It came from Jesus Christ my Lord,

He told me what to do.

And that was rest in who I was,

In who He said I’d be,

And I could really get it done,

‘Cause He empowered me.

Not afraid of anything,

No timidity or fear,

Depending on the Spirit,

Who’s inside and always near.

And when the Spirit leads us,

He secures us with His peace,

His presence is our confidence,

And from burdens gives release.

So boldly now we venture,

By His smile we are approved,

And we are ever grateful,

For every mountain that has moved.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NLT)

No matter the competing mental voices that may have scripted our insecurities, God’s truth tells us who we are and whose we are. He loves us without condition, and if we cooperate, will relieve us of every lie that has any control in our lives. His truth sets us free to be all we were created to be, and His destiny for us is within reach because His Spirit empowers us. We are energized to do what He says and hear Him say, “Well-done.” That is our future, in Jesus’ name.

Lord, empower us, in Jesus’ name.
