"Measureless"

I really can’t explain it,

The love is measureless,

My heart can scarce contain it,

‘Cause His love is the best.

And yet its great dimensions,

Are something we can know,

Springs from God’s intentions,

And all He wants to show.

The length and depth and width and height,

The Spirit will reveal,

Powerful, will change your life,

And something you can feel.

Rooted, grounded in that love,

Every child of God can know,

Sent through Christ from God above,

A never-ending flow.

Then filled with all His fullness,

As we were meant to be,

Healed of all our dullness,

And by the love set free.

“…And that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19, NAS)

Sometimes we are afraid if we emphasize God’s love too much people will feel a license to do whatever they want and then appeal to God’s mercy. I have found, however, that the opposite is true. While never denying the reality of God’s judgment, leading people into a greater awareness of God’s love inspires repentance and a life of holiness. The dimensions transcend what we could normally grasp intellectually, but the Holy Spirit can reveal it so powerfully that we are powerfully motivated to obey the Lord. And it’s not because we ought to but because He heals our want to.

Lord, show us the dimensions of Your love, in Jesus’ name.
