"Word Herder"

To herdsmen born and trails well-worn,

The livestock had to go,

Gathered in and sorted then,

Most shipping west, you know.

The years went by and still I try,

The cattle call to hear,

A-horseback man and daily plan,

To keep the bovine near.

But now I herd and chase the word,

Into a rhyming verse,

And sort them so, to say and grow,

A life that’s more than purse.

But living free and yet to be,

Someone who hears God’s voice,

To live His way and try to stay,

In line with righteous choice.

The truth in love from up above,

We write and verbalize,

So those who hear believe it dear,

And strive for all that’s wise.

Word herding now, always somehow,

We’re praying that the Spirit,

Speaks right through, God’s work to do,

And changes those who hear it.

“So faith comes by hearing, and hearing. by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17, NAS)

Ours is, above all, a verbal faith. And that’s exactly how the gospel is spread. Yes, we lead by example, but the reason we are saved is because told us about Jesus. And we should never under-estimate the power of our testimony. What the Lord has done needs to be told. As the Psalmist said: “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!” Ours is the best news on earth, and all our morality and acts of charity are ways to open doors to share our faith with those who need Jesus. Paul says God makes His appeal through us. Show it. Share it. Say it.

Lord, help us find the words to share our faith in You, in Jesus’ name.
